CBD for Anxiety | Can you use CBD to help with Anxiety and Panic Attacks?

CBD for Anxiety is being commonly used in hopes of potentially helping people battling with anxiety to reduce symptoms with little to no side effects.

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health conditions in the world. Nearly 31.1% of US adults alone experience anxiety at one point in their lives.

Keep reading to learn more about CBD and anxiety.

What is CBD?

CBD is an active chemical compound derived from the cannabis Sativa plant. The other famous cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which causes the ‘high’ feeling people experience after using marijuana.

CBD can either be derived from hemp or marijuana. Hemp-derived CBD Studiesis extracted from industrial hemp plants and has low THC levels. On the other hand, marijuana-derived CBD is derived from marijuana plants, which contain higher THC levels.

The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp-derived CBD products with no more than 0.3% THC, has made CBD the most sought after natural supplement.

How does CBD work?

CBD works with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates important body functions, such as pain, anxiety, mood, appetite, and sleep.

The ECS has two primary cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. Receptors are protein-based structures attached to body cells that receive signals from different stimuli.

CB1 receptors are available in abundance in the central nervous system and the brain, while CB2 receptors are located in the immune system.

CBD binds with these receptors, which changes serotonin signals. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in mental health — is responsible for controlling mood and happiness. When you have low serotonin, you’re likely to experience depression or anxiety. When you ingest CBD, it maintains balance in the body.

While there are anxiety medications such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), sertraline (Zoloft), often, they come along with unpleasant side effects. For this reason, many people are seeking natural alternatives, such as CBD.

CBD and anxiety: what research says

A 2015 study concluded that CBD interacts with CB1 receptors, 5-HT1A receptors, and other receptors in the brain responsible for modulating anxiety-induced behaviors. Researchers found that CBD is a potential treatment for different forms of anxiety, including:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Social anxiety disorder (SAD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

A case report about a ten-year-old girl who had a history of trauma took CBD to reduce post-traumatic stress disorder. Researchers found that cannabidiol lowered the child’s anxiety and significantly improved sleep.

Another 2019 study investigated the effects of CBD on 72 adults with anxiety and sleep issues. After one month of CBD treatment, the participants reported reduced anxiety levels and improved sleep.

Current research evaluated the effects of CBD on 400 adults living in New Zealand. The participants were administered CBD for various ailments, including non-cancer pain, neurological disorders, and mental health symptoms.

After three weeks of administering CBD treatment, individuals who received CBD for anxiety and depression reported a significant improvement in anxiety symptoms with no adverse effects.

With these studies, CBD may potentially help treat anxiety-related disorders. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.

How to use CBD for anxiety

There are several methods of administering CBD. They include:

  • Oils. CBD oil is the most renowned method of taking CBD. Oils can be swallowed or administered sublingually. But, sublingual administration is more bioavailable because it makes it into the bloodstream faster.

All you need to do is, place the recommended dose under the tongue and hold for a minute before swallowing. This allows the absorption of cannabinoids into the bloodstream via the mucous membranes.

  • Edibles. CBD edibles are a fun and discrete way of ingesting CBD. Edibles come in the form of gummies, cookies, brownies, among others. The best thing about edibles is that they’re delicious and provides CBD benefits at the same time.
  • Capsules. CBD capsules come in the form of pills and softgels. They contain a pre-measured dose, so you don’t have to figure out the right dose. CBD capsules’ only setback is that they’re slow-acting because they must pass through the digestive system.
  • Vaping. You can vape high-CBD cannabis using a vaporizer or a vape pen. Vaping is fast-acting because CBD is inhaled directly to the lungs, making its way into the bloodstream via the alveoli. Keep in mind vaping can expose you to carcinogens.

But, keep in mind, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate CBD for anxiety or other mental health conditions. So, users should purchase CBD products based on their own judgment.

CBD dosage for anxiety

If you’re thinking of using CBD oil for your anxiety, first talk to your doctor. A doctor can help figure out the right dose.

There’s no recommended CBD dose for anxiety since people respond to CBD uniquely. A little trial and error are allowed while finding the right amount that is suitable for your needs. Always start small and work your way up.

In a 2018 study, a total of 57 male adults received a CBD dose of 150mg, 300mg, and 600mg. Those who received 300mg of CBD 90 minutes before a simulated public speaking reported reduced anxiety.

However, more research is needed to determine the precise dosage for people with anxiety.

Conclusion

CBD’s role as a treatment for anxiety is still unclear because more long-term studies are needed to examine the benefits and risks. If you’re feeling agitated, irritable, restless, tired, excessively worried, or having difficulty concentrating, CBD for anxiety may potentially help.

Always talk to your doctor when introducing anything new into your diet.
