CBD Oil for Inflammatory Pain

Battling inflammation is one of the most unpleasant experiences that you could ever experience. Despite the sophistication in technology and research in the field of medicine, inflammatory pain remains a thorn in the flesh. This article is crafted to help you understand inflammatory pain better, and the potential of CBD oil in managing it.

Here is a breakdown of our discussion:

  • Causes of inflammation
  • The role of CBD in managing inflammatory pain
  • CBD oil and inflammatory pain
  • CBD side effects

Causes of inflammation

Inflammation occurs as a result of the body’s reaction to combat a pathogen or physical injury.

There are two main types of inflammation; acute and chronic inflammation.

Acute inflammation

It mainly occurs as a reaction to:

  • Infections: acute bronchitis, sore throat, and flu can cause inflammation.
  • External injuries: Wounds and physical trauma

The body reacts to the above causes in the following ways:

  • Enlargement of blood vessels to allow plasma proteins and leukocytes to suppress the condition (s).
  • Accumulation of plasma proteins, resulting in swelling as a result of fluid buildup.
  • Increased production of neutrophils to suppress the pathogen, injury, or infection.

It is important to note that acute inflammation occurs for a short period, usually hours or days. It is also considered less painful. The pain level and healing period depend on the cause of the inflammation and individual factors such as the part of the body affected.

Chronic inflammation

It is considered the most lethal form of inflammation. It also takes a long time to diagnose and might take years to heal. The main causes of chronic inflammation include the following:

  • Autoinflammatory diseases

Some autoinflammatory diseases, such as Behcet’s diseases have been identified positively as a cause of chronic inflammation.

  • Exposure

The body might react when it is exposed to environmental factors. For instance, exposure to harmful gases might lead to inflammation. In extreme cases, the body might become extremely sensitive, leading to inflammation.

  • Persistent acute inflammation

In some cases, recurrent acute inflammation might lower the body’s immunity, leading to chronic inflammation.

Some of the factors that increase the risk of chronic inflammation include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Unhealthy fats and sugars
  • Old age

What causes the main pain during inflammation?

The intensity of chronic pain varies from one person to another in both acute and chronic inflammation. There are two main causes of pain:

Fluid buildup – When fluids build up on body tissues, the tissues press against nerve endings. Given the hypersensitivity of some nerves, when the tissues press against them, the pain level increases.

Biochemical processes – Some biochemicals such as serotonin, edema, prostaglandins, and serotonin, cause pain.

The role of CBD in managing inflammatory pain

CBD, an acronym for cannabidiol, is revered due to its therapeutic effects. In the recent past, it has gained a lot of popularity, especially in helping to suppress inflammatory pain. Unlike alternative methods for coping with inflammatory pain that could cause potential side effects, CBD oil causes mild-to-zero side effects.

CBD manages inflammatory pain by interacting with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Although CBD does not bind directly to the receptors, it activates or suppresses them to manage pain linked to inflammation.

Can CBD oil help to manage inflammatory pain?

Fibromyalgia

Using CBD oil has shown positive signs of being able to help in coping with chronic pain resulting from fibromyalgia. The inflammatory pain in fibromyalgia might affect productivity. Although the FDA has not approved CBD drugs to manage fibromyalgia, CBD oil looks promising.

Rheumatoid arthritis

More often than not, rheumatoid arthritis receives more attention as far as inflammatory pain is concerned. A research carried out in 2016 to discuss how CBD oil helps to manage chronic pain made it more popular.

The researchers used CBD oil to test its efficacy in managing inflammatory pain in mice suffering from arthritis pain. During the study, the researchers applied varying doses of CBD oil gel on the areas. The gel was in 62.3, 6.2, 3.1, and 0.6mg/day.

After applying the 0.6 and 3.1mg of the gel, they found out that there were no changes, or the changes were negligible. On the other hand, when they increased the dose to 6.2 and 62.3mg/day respectively, the inflammatory pain on the joints reduced significantly.

The researchers concluded that CBD oil has the potential of managing chronic pain in people with rheumatoid arthritis. However, more research is underway to confirm the oil’s effectiveness.

Disclaimer:

The side effects of using CBD oil are very minimal and mild in most cases. Most of the people who get side effects recover after a few hours or days. However, it is prudent to discontinue using the oil should the effects persist. Please always refer to your doctor when adding anything new to your health routine.
